This project follows his 2020 album, Whole Lotta Red, and has been highly anticipated by fans due to its protracted development and Carti's evolving artistic direction. The journey to I Am Music began shortly after the release of Whole Lotta Red. In March 2021, Carti teased a new project initially titled Narcissist, with a planned release in September 2021. However, the album underwent several transformations, including a title change to Music in 2022, before settling on I Am Music. Throughout this period, Carti collaborated with various producers, notably Kanye West (Ye), and experimented with diverse sounds, blending elements of punk, rap, and experimental music. Carti immersed himself in the creative process, spending three months recording in a cave-like studio in Paris. This unique environment contributed to the album's distinctive sound, reflecting Carti's commitment to pushing musical boundaries.
To build anticipation, Carti released the single "All Red" on his 29th birthday, September 13, 2024. He also debuted five unreleased tracks during his headlining performance at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami Gardens, Florida, on December 15, 2024. I Am Music comprises 25 tracks, showcasing Carti's evolution as an artist. While he initially indicated the album would feature no guest appearances, he has collaborated with producers like F1lthy and the Working on Dying collective. With I Am Music, Playboi Carti continues to redefine the contemporary hip-hop landscape, offering fans an innovative and immersive musical experience.
