“LOST IN THE CITADEL” storytells through a one-sided and ended relationship, where Lil Nas X’s “guardian angel” rejects his love and emotionally inflicts pain to him. Lil Nas X is now trying to recoup himself together and begin something new in his life.
Sonically, the song revolves around an electronic-pop track mixing with a pop-rock element, and adds punk feels throughout its play. Moreover, and visually, an animation starts with Lil Nas X’s future-self coming to see the present, broken Lil Nas X sleeping in his bed on a high-ground room; he reaches out through the window then flies away.
As there was a teased snippet of this song available on September 14, 2021, “LOST IN THE CITADEL” marks the eighth track to appear on his studio debut album MONTERO.
